What causes a light switch to stop working but light stays on?

A stuck-closed or failed switch can stop working while the light stays on. Loose or backstabbed wiring can also keep the circuit closed. Miswired 3-way switches may leave a light energized from the other switch. A shorted switch or damaged fixture wiring can bypass the switch. Our licensed, insured electricians repair switches and wiring in Epsom and Manchester.

Quick checks:

  • Gently toggle the switch; note looseness or crackling.
  • Try the other 3-way switch (if present).
  • Turn off the breaker if there’s heat, odor, or sparks.
